Stay in contact with former colleagues, and try to make new contacts in and outside of your profession. These people can be valuable sources of information, making you aware of developments in your profession, offering advice, as well as alerting you to job opportunities.

Social media is also a great way to network and keep up to date about what is going on in your field.

Do your job well.

It will be hard to advance in your profession if you are not doing your current job adequately. So make sure you are performing well. Look for ways to show your skills and abilities, such as volunteering for assignments and offering suggestions for improvement.
