According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), demand for diagnostic medical sonographers (including ultrasound technicians) is expected to increase by 46 percent between 2012 and 2022. Most recent numbers place median annual salary for diagnostic medical sonographers at $66,410.

What do ultrasound technicians do?

Ultrasound technicians scan patients with ultrasound imaging equipment looking for problem areas. In fields such as obstetrics, they will also measure for fetal growth and development. They must provide clear images for the doctor to make accurate diagnoses. They must be capable of treating patients with empathy and professionalism.

What training and education is required for ultrasound technicians?

An associate degree is the usual standard for ultrasound technicians, but bachelor’s degrees or one-year certifications are offered in some areas. Candidates are expected to be proficient in anatomy, obstetrics and the operation of ultrasound equipment. Part of the educational process will take place in a clinical setting.

Must ultrasound technicians be certified?

Certification of ultrasound technicians is not currently required in any state, but registration or certification as a diagnostic medical sonographer can increase your marketability with employers.

The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) offers certifications that attest to areas of specialty including breast, abdominal and vascular sonography. Continuing education is required to maintain these certifications.

Where do ultrasound technicians work?

The most common settings for ultrasound technician jobs are in hospitals, physician’s offices and outpatient medical and diagnostic centers.

Common ultrasound technician tasks include:

  • Prepare and position patient for ultrasound
  • Use ultrasound equipment to provide clear diagnostic images
  • Follow physician’s directions and requirements
  • Make adjustments throughout the process to ensure satisfactory images
