According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for of radiologic technologists will increase by 21% between 2012 and 2022 – an above average rate of growth. With an aging population, fitness-focused adults and kids participating in sports, demand will only increase.

The Affordable Care Act is allowing more people to seek medical care making the outlook for x-ray technicians that much brighter. Here’s what you can expect as a medical tech.

Daily Duties Of An X-Ray Technician Include:

  • Interpreting orders to determine what areas are to be imaged
  • Explaining procedures to patients
  • Positioning patients
  • Adjusting and positioning equipment
  • Tracking patient records
  • Ensuring clear images have been taken
  • Protecting patient from unnecessary exposure to radiation

The median salary for x-ray technicians is $55,200 per year according to the BLS, but that can vary with location and demand.

X-ray technicians can work full time or part-time in permanent, temporary or per diem assignments. Techs are more likely to work regular hours in an outpatient facility. Hospitals or other facilities that operate 24/7 may need technicians for different shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Traditional X-ray machines
  • CT scan machines
  • MRI machines
  • Fluoroscopy
  • Film and digital mammography

What Is Required To Become An X-Ray Technician?

Education

As of 2015, technicians must earn an associate’s degree from an accredited institution to be eligible for national certification through The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

 

Students gain an understanding of human anatomy, biology and physics. Programs that include both classroom and practical training are preferred.

Training

New technicians develop their skills though certificate or degree programs or on-the-job training. They must demonstrate proficiency in specific clinical procedures within three years of earning an associate’s degree to be eligible for national certification.

 

Licensing and/or Certification
